good news iran: 2 Iranian documentary films invited to Tbilisi Festival

The 9th CinéDOC-Tbilisi Documentary Film Festival in Georgia will host two Iranian documentary films.

Iranian documentary films “Sunless Shadows” directed by Mehrdad Oskui and “Sonita” by Rokhsareh Qaemmaqami will be screened at the event.

The 9th CinéDOC-Tbilisi Documentary Film Festival will be held online from 15 August to 15 September in Georgia.

“Sunless Shadows” is about an Iranian juvenile detention center in which adolescent girls serve sentences for the crime of murdering fathers, husbands or male family members. The all-female prison is also a shelter from an aggressively male-dominated society. Through frank conversations and playful interactions, the girls open up about the consequences of, and sometimes the reasons for, their action.

The documentary has already been screened at several international festivals and won a number of international awards.

“Sonita” is about an Afghan refugee living in Iran who fights to keep her dream of becoming a rap star alive, while her family attempts to sell her as a bride.
