Iranian, Portuguese FMs discuss bilateral, int’l issues
Tehran (ISNA) – Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in a phone conversation with his Portuguese counterpart Joao Gomez Cravinho exchanged views on some issues related to bilateral relations as well as international issues of mutual interest.
The two sides pointed out more than five centuries of good relations between the two countries and emphasized on expanding the relations as much as possible.
The Iranian foreign minister also expounded the negotiations and constructive talks between the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) and the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in New York, emphasizing the need to close the agency’s case of accusations against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Meanwhile, Amir-Abdollahian reiterated that the Islamic Republic of Iran has not and will not provide any weapons to be used in the war in Ukraine.
The top Iranian diplomat added, “We believe that arming each side of the crisis will prolong the war, therefore we have not and do not consider war to be the right way either in Ukraine, Afghanistan, Syria or in Yemen.”
Amir-Abdollahian also said that Iran is a country “that faces terrorist groups such as Al-Qaeda, Jaish al-Adl and Daesh in the east and the west. Meanwhile, we have witnessed the entry of weapons from the western and eastern borders of the country in recent weeks.”
He continued, “This is while some countries in their interventionist statements consider riots and terrorist activities as protests and in practice provoke rioters and terrorists and have even put issuing resolutions or imposing sanctions (on Iran) on the agenda of the upcoming meeting of the European Union Council of Ministers and in case they take such a measure, the Islamic Republic of Iran will take countermeasures.”
While emphasizing the long history of good relations between the two countries, the foreign minister of Portugal welcomed the position and actions of the Islamic Republic of Iran in continuing the nuclear negotiations and especially its broader interaction with the IAEA.
Joao Gomez Cravinho also called for the continuation of Iran’s cooperation in order to reduce the crisis in Ukraine.
He also he expressed sympathy with the families of all victims of the recent incidents in Iran, including the law enforcement and security forces of the Islamic Republic.
