Iran reacts to statement of ministerial meeting of Persian Gulf Cooperation Council

Tehran (ISNA) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanaani has reacted to the statement of the 156th meeting of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council foreign ministers, stressing the regional strategy and principled policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in strengthening and deepening ties with countries of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council and development of the neighborly principle.

Kanaani expressed hope that regional countries establish new frameworks for cooperation in the region with a look to the future and away from their traditional rhetoric of the past.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman also said the developments of the recent months in the region have raised hopes and are in line with the interests of all countries in the region.

“Countries of this region have a communal responsibility to advance the interests of this region and Iran has always supported talks and cooperation among Persian Gulf countries as regional partners,” he added.

Kanaani also reiterated the unchanging position of Iran, stressing that the three Iranian islands of Abou Mousa, the Greater and Lesser Tunbs are inseparable and everlasting parts of the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The foreign ministry spokesman also rejected the statement of the council on issues related to the nuclear program of Iran as unfounded, adding that “the Islamic Republic of Iran pursues its peaceful nuclear program through interaction with relevant countries and in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, in compliance with its rights and duties under the Non-Proliferation Treaty and the comprehensive nuclear safeguards agreement.”

Kanaani concluded by saying that the Islamic Republic of Iran, once more, declares its serious will to move toward the objectives of a stable, secure and prosperous region in cooperation with neighboring countries and its brothers in the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council.
