Iran FM stresses formation of working group for Aras river

Tehran-Baku bilateral relations were the most important topics discussed between Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and Jeyhun Bayramov.

The top Iranian diplomat wished a happy new year to the people and government of Azerbaijan and expressed hope that the bilateral relations between the nation would further expand in the coming year.

Referring to the Islamic Republic of Iran’s readiness to increase transit and transportation cooperation between the two countries, Amir-Abdollahian said, “We must increase cooperation in the transportation and transit sector, and we are also ready to increase trade exchanges between the two countries.”

He further stressed the Islamic Republic of Iran’s opposition to the involvement of foreign countries in the region and emphasized, “by adopting positive approaches, the problems of the region can be solved well by the regional countries.”

The formation of working groups on the issue of media activities on both sides and conducting surveys on water scarcity and pollution of the Aras River on the shared border between the two countries were among the other issues brought up and discussed by the Iranian foreign minister in the telephone conversation.

Bayramov, for his part, stressed the importance of cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran and announced his government’s interest in holding a joint economic commission between the two countries at the beginning of the new year and promoting bilateral economic and trade relations.

The two Iranian and top Azeri diplomats also held a phone conversation on November 15, during which  Amir-Abdollahian reiterated Iran’s position that respecting the sovereignty of countries is an important and basic principle that must be taken into consideration.
