Iran claims title at Asian Weightlifting championship

Tehran (ISNA) – Iran won 2 silver medals in the super-heavyweight tournaments of Asian Weightlifting Championships 2023.

In the closing day of the Asian Weightlifting Championships 2023 in Seoul, super-heavyweight category competitions were held. Iran had two representatives in this tournament both of whom won silver medals. Therefore, Iran’s national weightlifting team won championship of the event with 635 points, with Uzbekistan standing at the second place, with 631 points.

Ayat Sharifi with the record of 197 kg for snatch and 239 kg for clean and jerk (a total of 436 kg) stood at Asia’s 4th place, winning the silver medal for the clean and jerk attempt.

Similarly, Alireza Yousefi, the other Iranian representative in the tournament, pulled up a total of 436 kg (190 in snatch and 246 in clean and jerk), ending up with the silver medal in clean and jerk and stood at 5th place. He also pushed the world clean and jerk youth level by 7 kg and world total record by 4 kg.

It was the two Iranian’s first appearance in the Asian weightlifting championship. They competed with Bahraini world and Olympic runner-up with Armenian heritage, Gor Minasyan and the Uzbek Olympic champion, Akbar Djuraev.
