Iran blasts verdict by primary, appeal courts on Hamid Nouri

Nasser Kan’ani made the remarks on Tuesday night, emphasizing that it is a pity that the Swedish court has issued such a destructive judgment without considering the standards of fair proceedings.

“Unfortunately, the Swedish judicial system, by siding with the terrorist groups that have been engaged in the most heinous terrorist and anti-human acts against the people of Iran, Iraq, and even Europe for decades, has harmed the interests of the two nations and the old, historical and deep-rooted relations between the two countries have been put at risk,” he added.

The senior Iranian diplomat went on to say that based on its inherent duties in defending the rights of its citizens, the Islamic Republic of Iran has used all legal capacities and facilities to free the said citizen from the clutches of injustice and will continue its efforts until the full fulfillment of the rights of its citizens.

Kan’ani also emphasized that Iran reserves its right to take appropriate steps.

An appeals court in Sweden has upheld a life sentence given to a former Iranian official despite repeated objections from Tehran that the verdict is politically-motivated.

The Svea Court of Appeal said in a statement on Tuesday that it “affirmed the judgment… in significant parts” that had been given to Hamid Nouri in July 2022 for his alleged role in cases of human rights violations in Iran.

It described the case brought against Nouri in the initial court proceedings as “robust” and “correct.”

Last July, a Swedish court sentenced Nouri to life imprisonment. The court, which was described by Iran as illegitimate in the first place, convicted Nouri of “war crimes and crimes against humanity” entirely based on claims made by MKO terrorists living in exile across Europe.

He has been placed in solitary confinement since his illegal arrest.
