Iran, Spain discuss regional, bilateral issues

Tehran (ISNA) – Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and his Spanish counterpart, José Manuel Albares Bueno discussed regional and bilateral issues on the phone.

Amir-Abdollahian pointed to historical ties between the two countries and welcomed a further expansion of Tehran-Madrid relations.

He criticized the unconstructive positions and measures taken by some Western countries in the face of riots and terror incidents in Iran, saying, “Some European officials pay more attention to their party-related goals than the national interests of their countries.”

“We always welcome interactions with Europe. This is while the trio of Germany, France and Britain have been unable, since 2015, to implement the nuclear deal, which constitutes an international commitment, following the imposition of sanctions by the Trump administration,” the Iranian foreign minister said.

Amir-Abdollahian thanked Spain for condemning the terrorist attack in Shiraz.

For his part, the Spanish foreign minister condemned the terror attack in Shiraz and voiced solidarity on behalf of his country’s government and people with Iran’s government and nation. He also stressed the need for dialog.

He described Iran-Spain ties as historical.

The top diplomat also called for contribution to efforts toward securing the freedom of two Spanish citizens arrested during recent riots in Iran.
