Iranian FM stresses country’s sovereignty over trio islands

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian made the remarks reacting to the 6th Russian-Arab Cooperation Forum statement held on Wednesday in Morroco, regarding Iran’s trio islands.

In a phone call on Friday, the Iranian and Russian foreign ministers discussed several regional and international issues, as well as the bilateral relations between Tehran and Moscow.

Considering the process of negotiations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Armenia to reach a peace agreement as positive, Amir-Abdollahian pointed to the negative consequences of the interventions of some foreign parties in the region and stated that the countries of the region can play a constructive role in establishing and ensuring peace between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Referring to the 6th Russian-Arab Cooperation Forum statement, the top Iranian diplomat stressed that respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries is one of the fundamental principles in relations between countries, and Tehran is very serious regarding the issues related to respecting its territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Lavrov, for his part, referred to the recent 3+3 format meeting held in Tehran, stressing the need for the related countries to strengthen cooperation in order to assist Azerbaijan and Armenia to reach a peace agreement.

The Russian Foreign Minister also hailed the important and constructive role of Iran in helping to establish peace in the South Caucasus region.

Terming the relations between Tehran and Moscow as strategic, Lavrov said that Russia has always respected Iran’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

In the negotiations to prepare the final statement of the Morocco meeting, Russia clearly paid attention to respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iran, he said.

The two top diplomats also discussed the latest developments related to the situation in the Gaza Strip.
