Iran beats record of 8.3 million tons transit for non-oil goods in 2022

Tehran (ISNA) – According to the latest report from transit performance in Iran in 2022, 10.8 million tons oil and non-oil goods transited through Iran in 2022. The figure is 8.3 million tons for non-oil and 2.5 million tons for oil goods.

There is 10.7 percent growth in non-oil transit compared to the last year which was 7.5 million tons in 2021.

Pointing to the achievements of transport sector in the last year, Iran’s deputy transport minister Shahriyar Afandizadeh, declared approaches, priorities, initiatives, and achievements of the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development in 2022 promising for the development of transit in the country.

Based on a trilateral agreement between Iran, Azerbaijan, and Russia for activation of International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) in September, the countries agreed on 15 million tons transit by 20230 that necessitates investments for completion of key transport infrastructures particularly Rasht-Astara Railroad.

Back in 2022, during the first trilateral meeting of Iran, Azerbaijan, and Russia dedicated to the prospects of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) in Baku, the parties signed a trilateral statement for development of the INSTC. Due to the importance of INSTC for international transport in the region, three countries discussed development and completion of the rail route along the corridor.

Equally important, in October 2022, Tehran hosted the first ministerial summit among six states including Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Iran for transit cooperation.

The summit was an initiative for regional convergence and an opportunity for infrastructure and transport synergy in the region which would make 20 million tons freight transit possible among these countries.

The negotiations between transport ministers of these states during the 2022 Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Samarkand preceded this multilateral summit in Tehran aiming to reach a joint action among the members.
