Tehran (ISNA) – Isfahan City was chosen as the Capital of Iran during the reign of the Safavid Dynasty, and it was the beginning of the architectural boom in the city.
The architectural boom resulted in the building of many valuable constructions in Isfahan, with Chehel Sotoun Palace being one of the most famous among them.
When Abbas the Great was reigning in Iran, the construction of the Palace began and was completed as the beginning of the reign of Abbas II of Persia.
The name of Chehel Sotoun, meaning “Forty Columns”, was inspired by the 20 slender wooden columns supporting the entrance pavilion. When the columns are reflected in the water of a marble fountain located in front of the Palace, it appears to be forty columns.
The usage of the central hall of the Chehel Sotoun Palace was for receiving foreign guests. It has paintings about historical events of Iran decorated with the best architectural features, a masterpiece at that time.
The Chehel Sotoun Palace was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011 and is among 9 Iranian Gardens collectively registered as one of Iran’s 23 registered World Heritage Sites called the Persian Garden.
